Carthain.com nit-picky design and/or function issues

Postby sclocke on Tue Feb 27, 2007 12:46 pm

I have no idea if there is a thread for this already. I didn't look very hard.

Anyhow. I figured some sort of thread with a general discussion of anything relating to Carthain.com, whether it's the page layout, or quirky code, or whatever.

Perhaps it's just my version of IE at work--could be very old, I'm using Windows NT after all--there are a number of wonky things going on:
-The card in the top right corner has its own scroll bars on both axis.
-The Main Menu is blank until you roll over the items on the menu.

For some reason, I can only sign in from the home page. I figure that, since there's tons of space on the left side of the screen, the login thingies should be available on every screen. Kind of annoying to have to go to the home page to log in and then go to the forums.

Also, a lot of the avatars aren't showing up. In fact, I think Matt's is the only one that is being displayed properly.

Again, this could just be my crappy NT IE. I don't know.

Should be fixed now.

.... not having an older version of IE to check on, I can't really fix it. It's designed so that Firefox & IE7 will display things correctly ... any extra effort to make older browsers display it properly isn't worth it.

Well, you can click on the 'log in' link at the top of the forums, and it will redirect you to a general log in page as well.

But, for the time being, I added the log in section on the left to all pages on the site.

I think the avatar's got messed up in the transition -- mine shows up because I went into my profile and set it up again. Anyone else who has/wants an avatar will have to do the same.

I'm finding that these boards aren't running very smoothly underneath this Joomla software?!? Is there a way to access the boards without the extra overhead?

I'll click a link and instead of it taking me in to a thread, it refreshes the page...that is just one of several things I've noticed since the new location.

The phpBB code and the Joomla code don't ever interfere with each other. And the result of clicking on links would depend all on where the links are set up to go ... I haven't encountered any broken links myself (either in the manner that you described, or in the more traditional meaning of that term).

Any specific examples? I can go have a look at some of them and see if they are being created improperly.

Well, when I click on the bottom 'post reply' it would 66% of the time give me a blank page, stating 'Done' in the status bar. When I tried to 'Submit' a post, it was about the same percentage of failure with the same result. This seems to be at work though, so far tonight (1:00am) seems to be ok, but I wonder if 'traffic' might have something to do with the issue as well.

I have not yet had any problems with posting on these new boards, but I'll let you know if something comes up.

(Now, watch this: this will be the first post that gets mangled. But then, if it is, you won't be able to watch it get mangled, since you will have no idea this post existed in the first place. Oh, the irony!)
